From Enslavement to Empowerment

The Story of The St. Emma

and St. Francis Black Boarding Schools

INFO

Melissa Knowles and I traveled to Powhatan, VA to visit a plantation turned campus for two boarding schools; one a military academy for African-American boys, and the other, a school for black girls. Decades after the St. Emma Military Academy for boys and the St. Francis De Sales school for girls closed down respectively, tours are now held on the property to memorialize their history.
